What baby hair knows that adult hair forgets.

Infant scalp biology is the most perfect version of what your scalp is supposed to do. Understanding it changes how you understand everything that went wrong.

What baby hair knows that adult hair forgets.

There is something we can learn from the very beginning. Before the first box dye. Before the years of sulfate shampoo. Before the hormonal shifts and the chronic stress and the supplements that promised results. Before all of that, there was a scalp in perfect working order — producing sebum at the right rate, maintaining the right pH, holding nearly every follicle in the active growth phase simultaneously.

That scalp was yours. It's still yours. Beneath everything that's happened to it, the blueprint has not changed. And understanding what made it work at the beginning is one of the most clarifying ways to understand what it needs now.

The Biology

What the infant scalp does that most adult routines undo.

A healthy newborn's scalp maintains five simultaneous biological conditions that hair care science has spent decades trying to restore in adults. They are not complicated. They are, in fact, embarrassingly simple. The difficulty isn't knowing what they are — it's undoing twenty or thirty years of disruption.

Biological Factor
Baby Scalp
Typical Adult Scalp
Acid mantle pH
5.0–5.5 (ideal)
6.5–8.0 after most shampoos
Sebum production
Balanced, responsive
Dysregulated by over-washing
Follicle activity
Near 100% in anagen
Varies; stress pushes to telogen
Scalp microbiome
Diverse, balanced
Disrupted by antibacterials
Inflammatory state
Minimal
Low-grade chronic in many adults
Chemical exposure
None
Years of cumulative load

None of those adult scalp conditions are inevitable. They are not the result of aging — they are the result of specific, identifiable disruptions that began the first time a synthetic shampoo stripped the acid mantle and the body began compensating. That compensation loop — strip, overproduce, repeat — is what most adult hair routines are actually maintaining, not solving.

The Five Lessons

What to bring back from the beginning.

🧪
Respect the acid mantle
The scalp's slightly acidic environment (pH 4.5–5.5) is its primary defence. Most adult shampoos have a pH of 6–8. Every wash alkalises the scalp, disrupting the microbiome, triggering inflammation, and opening the cuticle. Laritelle formulates to pH 5.5 because that's what the scalp was designed for — before we started changing it.
💧
Let sebum do its job
Sebum is not the enemy. It seals the cuticle, protects the scalp microbiome, and lubricates the strand from root to tip. A baby's scalp produces exactly the right amount because it has never been over-stripped. Training your scalp back toward sebum balance is a 4–6 week process of washing less frequently with gentler formulas. The greasy transition period is real and worth it.
🌿
Minimal ingredients, maximum recognition
An infant's scalp processes everything applied to it through the same receptor pathways as an adult's — except the skin barrier is more permeable. Everything that goes on a baby's scalp should be something the body already recognises. That's the correct framework for everyone — ingredients your skin has been reading for millennia, not synthesising responses to for three decades.
🔄
Trust the growth cycle
Babies shed hair and regrow it completely in their first months — sometimes multiple times. Every follicle runs its cycle fully because nothing has interrupted the signalling. The cycle is not broken in adult hair. It's distracted, suppressed, or malnourished. Remove the disruption and the cycle resumes. This is the whole premise of everything Laritelle does.
🤫
Less is doing more than you think
A baby doesn't condition twice, apply a mask, use a leave-in, and finish with a serum. The scalp at its baseline is remarkably self-sufficient. The cumulative product load that most adult routines place on the scalp — layer after layer, daily — creates dependency, not improvement. Simplifying is not settling. It's restoring.

Why the Laritelle Baby collection exists — and what it teaches us.

When we formulated the Baby collection, we didn't create a separate line with different principles. We applied the same principles with even less compromise. No surfactants that could disrupt the acid mantle. No fragrance compounds that accumulate in developing tissue. No preservatives the body can't metabolise cleanly. pH held precisely at 5.5.

And then something interesting happened: adults started using it. Not because they misread the label — because they understood that the standard their newborn deserved was the standard they deserved too. The Baby collection is gentle because it is honest. And honest formulation turns out to be what adult scalps had been waiting for all along.

The Purple Cow

A novel starting point — not a novel ingredient.

Your scalp remembers what it was designed to do. It ran perfectly, once. It can again — not with another layer of complexity, but with a deliberate return to conditions it already knows how to thrive in. The same conditions it had at the very beginning — before we decided to improve on something that didn't need improving.

What if we stopped trying to solve the problems adult hair care created, and started building from the baseline that was always there? That is the whole question Laritelle is organised around. The answer is pH 5.5, botanicals your follicle already recognises, and the discipline to do less, more consistently.

Your hair was born knowing
exactly what it needed.
It still does.
