Sunday Ritual · The Seasonal Shed · Calm Maintenance · 3 min read

The shed is here. Here is what to do — and what not to do — when more hair than usual is in the brush.

The September 7 Sunday said: test, tighten the ritual, reduce the cortisol load. Two weeks later, the shed is more established. This Sunday is for what to do when it is actually happening — and what not to do, which matters more than what to do.

The worst thing most people do when they notice more hair in the brush is change everything. They add supplements, swap products, try a new routine. The scalp environment becomes unstable. The changes make assessment impossible. And the shed continues because it was always going to continue — it is a seasonal wave, not a response to what is on the bathroom shelf. Consistency through the shed is the hardest and most important practice.

The shed is here.

If you tested in September as the September 7 Sunday suggested, you either have results now or are waiting for them. If the results showed a correctable deficiency — ferritin below 40 ng/mL, vitamin D below 40 ng/mL, a thyroid value worth addressing — you have already started correcting it. That correction is the most useful thing you could have done in September. It will not stop the current shed. The hair already in telogen from the summer peak will shed regardless. But it changes what happens after the shed — how quickly follicles reactivate, how full the density recovery is, what next spring looks like.

If you didn't test in September: there is still time. The August 19 blood test guide. The October shed peak is still a few weeks away. Test now and you will have results before November.

What to do when the shed is actually happening.

Less than you think.

The worst response to noticing more hair in the brush is the most common one: change everything. Add a new supplement. Switch products. Start a new oil treatment. Increase washing frequency to feel like you're doing something. These responses are understandable — the visible loss creates urgency that demands action. But the shed is not responding to what is on your bathroom shelf. It is a seasonal wave that began in the follicles three months ago. The products you use today do not change what is already in the brush.

What they can affect is what comes next. The scalp environment during the shedding phase determines the environment for regrowth. This is where the ritual matters — not as a way to stop the shed, but as a way to maintain the conditions in which regrowth is most ready to begin when the wave passes.

The one exception to "change nothing."

If your September blood tests identified a correctable deficiency — start the correction now. That is the one change worth making during the shed.

Ferritin below 40 ng/mL: start iron supplementation at the dose your clinician recommends (ferrous bisglycinate 25-50mg elemental iron is the most tolerated form, taken away from tea, coffee, calcium, and thyroid medication). The August 20 iron foods article covers the dietary strategy alongside supplementation.

Vitamin D below 40 ng/mL: start vitamin D3 supplementation. The sun exposure that could have maintained it is disappearing now — supplementation is not optional for hair-optimal levels through a UK or northern European autumn and winter.

Thyroid value that warrants attention: this is a conversation with your GP or endocrinologist, not a self-managed supplement decision. Make the appointment. The thyroid article from August 2 covered why this matters and what the hair-optimal TSH range is.

Everything else: hold steady. The ritual continues. The products stay the same. The consistency continues. The shed runs its course.

The one question not to ask right now.

"Is it working?"

The shed cannot be assessed while it is happening. The hair in the brush today represents follicle decisions from July. The products you are using today are building what will be visible in November. Those two things are on different timescales and cannot be compared in a mirror in mid-September.

The August 16 Sunday established the correct assessment tool: two photographs, same angle, same light, same distance, six months apart. The photograph for that comparison was taken in February or March. The next one is in February or March of next year. Everything between those two photographs is process — not evidence.

Consistency is hardest precisely when it feels most futile. The shed is visible daily. The regrowth is invisible for months. That asymmetry is the biological reality of the hair cycle — it is not a message about whether the approach is working.

The shed is here. The ritual continues unchanged.
Consistency through it is the practice. November is when the work of September shows.

The sets — for the ritual that continues through the shed.

The seasonal shed is the moment the daily ritual most matters and feels least rewarding. The sets make the consistent daily practice easier to maintain through the weeks when the biology is working underground and the mirror is not yet confirming it.
