Stinging nettle has one of those reputations that precedes the research. Folk medicine across Europe, Asia, and North America used it for hair centuries before anyone knew what 5-alpha reductase was. Herbalists brewed it. Ayurvedic practitioners included it. Traditional European healers recommended it for thinning hair. The plant was doing something — the observation just needed the mechanism to catch up.

In 2023, it started to. A 2023 in vitro study demonstrated that Urtica dioica leaf extract significantly downregulates 5-alpha reductase type II gene expression in human keratinocyte cells. Type II 5-alpha reductase is the same enzyme that finasteride specifically targets — the one that converts testosterone to DHT in the hair follicle's outer root sheath. Nettle isn't blocking the enzyme the way a pharmaceutical does, but it is affecting its gene expression — reducing how much of it the cell produces in the first place.

A 2025 computational study then went further: researchers examining phytochemicals from Urtica dioica, saw palmetto, and fenugreek identified six compounds with strong binding affinity to the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, supporting the mechanistic basis for nettle's traditional use against hair loss.

What Nettle Actually Does

Four things — and the honest state of evidence for each.

5-alpha reductase inhibition — mechanistically confirmed, clinically still limited

Nettle contains lignans — particularly secoisolariciresinol — beta-sitosterol, and fatty acids that inhibit the 5-alpha reductase enzyme without affecting normal testosterone levels. Beta-sitosterol is the same compound found in saw palmetto that contributes to its 5-AR inhibition. The selectivity — inhibiting DHT conversion without lowering testosterone — is the same property that makes saw palmetto appealing compared to finasteride, which does lower testosterone.

The honest caveat: most of the DHT-blocking evidence for nettle comes from BPH (prostate hyperplasia) research — a DHT-driven condition studied because it's more prevalent and better-funded than hair loss research. The direct hair clinical trials are limited. The mechanism is credible; the hair-specific clinical evidence is not yet at the scale of saw palmetto's.

Nutritional delivery to the scalp — often overlooked entirely

Stinging nettle contains vitamins A, B, C, and K, along with essential minerals including iron, potassium, calcium, and magnesium — all vital nutrients that maintain optimal hair health. The plant contains approximately 30% protein by dry mass, providing nutritional support to hair follicles. Silica — also present in significant amounts — supports keratin structure and hair shaft strength.

When nettle is in a topical formula applied to the scalp, these compounds contact the scalp surface and follicular openings directly. It's not systemic nutrition — you'd need to eat or supplement nettle for that — but the local antioxidant and micronutrient contact at the scalp surface is a meaningful secondary benefit beyond the DHT mechanism.

Nettle's chlorophyll content — approximately 50mg per 100g — has demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity relevant to hair loss. Nettle also has well-documented antioxidant properties through its flavonoid and phenolic content, adding another route to the oxidative stress reduction that green tea, rosemary, and argan oil address in the formula through parallel compounds. Multiple botanical sources, multiple antioxidant compounds, all contributing to the same scalp surface protection.

Sebum regulation — the scalp balance benefit

Nettle has documented astringent properties that help regulate sebum production at the scalp surface. Excess sebum feeds Malassezia overgrowth — the seborrheic dermatitis cascade covered in the June article — and nettle's sebum-regulating effect reduces the fuel supply for that cascade. For people with oily scalps who are prone to scalp inflammation, this is a practically useful property that most nettle coverage never mentions.

Where nettle fits in the formula — and why it's there.
