The beauty industry is spending billions to synthesise what botanicals already do — and the Cosmoprof 2026 trend report just confirmed it.

Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna 2026 — the world's largest professional beauty trade show — identified "Biotech-y" as one of its five defining trends for the year: lab-derived and biomimetic ingredients designed to replicate natural structures and mimic the body itself. The longevity and preventative wellness market is forecast to reach $1.8 trillion by 2034. Billions are being invested in synthesising compounds that deliver what botanical actives have delivered for centuries. The irony the trend report does not quite say out loud: the botanicals that biotech is racing to replicate — the 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, the anti-inflammatory flavonoids, the vasodilatory compounds — are already present, whole and unprocessed, in the plants that Ayurvedic medicine identified three thousand years ago. The industry is arriving, expensively, at where the plants already were.
